Chief April Morse of the Unified Police Department briefed the council on Jan. activity and highlighted a major narcotics case generated from a traffic stop.
Morse reported that the department responded to 2,216 total calls in January and opened 755 cases. Officers issued 273 traffic citations during the month, figures she described as roughly in line with the prior year.
Morse singled out a case handled by a Drug Enforcement Unit detective after a traffic stop. The driver initially provided false information, the detective employed a K‑9 that alerted to contraband, and investigators obtained probable cause for a search warrant at a nearby hotel. Morse said the search recovered four pounds of fentanyl pills, 64 grams of heroin, 27 grams of cocaine, 15 grams of crack cocaine and about $25,000 in U.S. currency.
—From a traffic stop and a detective that knows what he's doing, he was able to generate that case,— Morse said. Council members thanked the officer for the work, and no questions were raised during the update.
The UPD chief closed by offering to take questions and noting the month—s call and citation totals would be available for the council—s review.
