Resident criticizes city spending and water rates during public comment

Maynard Little, a Murphy resident, used the Feb. 18 public-comment period to press the City Council for answers about city spending and utility rates.

"Why have you allowed the city to spend slash commit over $15,000,000... yet have not initiated property tax relief via a homestead exemption, disabled senior property tax freeze or increase in the disabled senior property exemption?" Little said. He identified himself as living at 1004 Saint Mark Drive and said the disabled-senior exemption had not been increased since February 2006. He said recent state actions had increased homestead exemptions "from 40 to 100k" and that the state was considering further increases.

Little also criticized the city's water and sewer rate analysis and said the rates were "some 30% higher" than necessary. "Several of you have filed for reelection. Isn't it the responsibility of a council member to address concerns and answer questions from residents? Why haven't you?" he asked, adding that he expected answers if council members are reelected.

Why it matters: Public-comment periods are the scheduled forum for residents to raise items not on the agenda; Little's remarks touch on taxation, utility rates and long-term city spending priorities.

The council did not provide responses in the public-comment portion of the meeting. No staff presentation or council action addressing Little—s specific requests was taken during the Feb. 18 meeting.
