San Benito city leaders on Feb. 18 urged residents to attend the expanded Hogwaddle festival this weekend and described early financial indicators municipal staff say show strong community and regional interest.
City officials said the event will run across multiple days with a Thursday family carnival night, evening performances Friday and Saturday and music on Sunday; organizers provided times for each evening program and said the full schedule is posted on the city website. The commission was told that 36 cook-off slots sold out and that food-vendor and artisan fees collected to date total $12,100. Presale revenue tied to headliner Randy Rogers was cited at about $35,000, and sponsorships were reported at $74,000.
The mayor (identified in the meeting only by title) framed the event as part of a broader economic development strategy that includes a proposed amphitheater-anchored music venue and adjacent retail center. “We want the citizens to enjoy it,” the mayor said, adding that staff expect the festival to draw visitors from across the valley and that the city will measure event impacts using Placer AI to track origin and visit behavior.
City officials and staff said they plan to use attendance and spending data from Hogwaddle to support long-term development goals, including attracting hotels and other businesses near the proposed venue. Economic-development staff and the city’s EDC were named repeatedly during the presentation as coordinating event logistics and sponsorship outreach.
Organizers also described operational details: carnival family night Thursday (6–10 p.m.), evening headline acts Friday and Saturday (evening hours provided during the meeting) and a Sunday schedule that includes School of Rock in the late afternoon and other bands later in the evening. The commission encouraged public participation and noted staff and volunteers remain on-site during the setup and event days.
The presentation emphasized that this year’s festival is larger than previous years (city staff said Hogwaddle has grown from a two-day event to four days) and that the city intends to measure not only on-site receipts but also secondary spending in local shops and businesses.
Organizers thanked multiple staff members and outside partners for logistics and sponsorship work; the law firm and other contract items discussed later in the meeting were treated separately. No formal vote was required for the festival update.
San Benito officials asked residents to consult the city web page for the event schedule and noted additional announcements and a forthcoming state-of-the-city address that will include further development details.
