Little Elm library installs 24-hour kiosk, orders new furniture and scales back planned robot check-in

Little Elm’s library director updated council on technology, furniture and outreach plans, telling the council the library’s 24-hour kiosk is in regular use and that library staff reallocated funds to buy new self-check stations and furniture instead of a large automatic material-handling robot.

"We've had about 605 checkouts, 662 returns," Diana said, adding that the kiosk has 74 unique users and that staff visit it multiple times per week to service holds and returns. The kiosk — a vending‑machine style unit installed at Paloma Creek Union Park — is uncommon in Texas, Diana said, and is generating steady usage.

Diana said the library originally budgeted for an AMH (automatic material handling) carousel but determined the equipment would consume the library’s only storage/program room and would not be an efficient use of limited space. Instead, she said, the library purchased new self-check stations and a new return system, and directed the remainder of the budgeted funds toward new furniture to improve seating and study layouts for children, teens and adults.

Upcoming library initiatives include a StoryWalk installation at Beard Park funded by an award from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and expanded summer outreach and story-time programming. Diana said new furniture deliveries are imminent and encouraged council members to visit the refreshed library space.
