Planning commission approves mobile-access mat and dune mitigation plan at 8 Mile Road

The City of Galveston Planning Commission on a unanimous vote approved a license to use city right-of-way (25PDash006) and accepted a staff notice of mitigation for disturbance of dune and dune vegetation tied to a proposed accessible path from an overflow parking area to the beach at 8 Mile Road in Beachside Village, Phase 9.

Staff presented the request as a companion to an earlier mitigation notice (24BF-136) and described the proposal as a nonpermanent MOBIMAT — a roll-out mat system that provides an ADA-accessible surface over sand. Daniel, planning staff, said the mat would run through the west side of the 8 Mile Road right-of-way and is intended as an alternative to a raised wooden dune walkover that could harm an existing, taller dune. Daniel told the commission the product is removable and can be rolled up in advance of storms, and that staff recommended approval with specific and standard conditions.
