The California State Senate adopted Senate Concurrent Resolution 16, proclaiming January as Thyroid Health Awareness Month, after remarks from the resolution’s sponsor and a senator who shared a personal cancer diagnosis.
Senator Alvarado Gill presented SCR 16 on the Senate floor, described thyroid function and prevalence statistics from the American Thyroid Association, and asked colleagues for an aye vote. Alvarado Gill said the thyroid “regulates the temperature of the body and how the whole system of your digestive and endocrine system actually work” and urged people to request blood tests from primary-care providers if they suspect problems.
Senator Jones spoke in support and shared a personal history: he described noticing a lump in 1999, undergoing partial then total thyroidectomy, receiving a cancer diagnosis and years of thyroid-replacement therapy. Jones said his case was atypical given his age and sex but used his experience to encourage screenings and specialist referrals.
Senators praised the resolution and the floor proceeded to a unanimous roll-call vote. The clerk announced the tally as “Ayes 35, No 0,” and the resolution was adopted.
The resolution urges awareness and screening; it does not itself create a new program or funding. Sponsors encouraged Californians to consult health-care providers about thyroid testing.
