UN alarmed by large-scale violence in Sudan; Zamzam displacement camp and White Nile attack reported

The United Nations said it is alarmed by reports of large-scale violence in different parts of Sudan, including an attack on El Kutena town in White Nile State and ongoing threats to civilians in North Darfur.
The spokesperson said more than 50 people were reportedly killed in an attack on El Kutena on Sunday. Those reports included accounts of mass sexual violence and hundreds of families forced to flee.
In North Darfur, humanitarian partners warned that civilians in and around Zamzam displacement camp continue to face grave threats because of ongoing fighting. The spokesperson said at least 17 civilians were reportedly killed and many more wounded in an attack that also damaged parts of the main market in Zamzam, the primary source of supplies for camp residents. The spokesperson noted Zamzam is among areas of Sudan where famine has emerged.
Following an escalation in North Darfur’s capital, El Fasher, and surrounding areas, people have been seeking safety and shelter in an area the spokesperson referred to as Addababa in the northern state. State authorities reported that more than 33,100 people from North Darfur — mostly older people, wounded people and those with chronic diseases — arrived in Addababa in less than two months.
The UN human rights office told the spokesperson that entrenched impunity is fueling gross human-rights violations and abuses in Sudan as fighting spreads and more groups become involved. The office called for a broad international effort toward accountability and to stem the flow of arms. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said deliberate attacks on civilians and civilian objects, summary executions and other abuses underscore the failure of parties to respect international law and human-rights obligations.
The UN is monitoring the situation and working with humanitarian partners to respond to the needs of displaced and affected populations, the spokesperson said.
