Supervisors approve four public highway easements in Rice Lake subdivision to formalize 40-foot right-of-way

The Winnebago County Board of Supervisors approved four public highway easements in the Rice Lake subdivision, accepting five-foot strip easements from multiple property owners to formalize a 40-foot right-of-way along portions of the development.

County staff said the easements cover small strips adjacent to roads and parking areas to create a consistent 40-foot roadway width across the subdivision. Officials emphasized they do not plan immediate removal of retaining walls, trees or other fixtures; the easements are intended to preserve future right-of-way for snow removal, utilities and road maintenance.

Board members noted specific properties where retaining walls or trees are close to the road and said staff will coordinate with homeowners if future improvements are proposed. The county explained some easements use current legal descriptions that include larger parcel groupings, which creates redundancy but simplifies property records.
