County jail expansion advances as modular cells near delivery; kitchen complete but camera damage delays final move‑in

County staff and contractors updated commissioners on progress at the county jail expansion. The update said the pre‑engineered metal building shell is mostly complete, interior masonry and conduit work continue, and the kitchen addition is finished and being stocked. County staff reported that the modular cells will be delivered on the 17th of the next month; when delivered the installation of the modular units will enable the next stage of interior finishes.

The project team showed photos of red iron erection, masonry core work and the corridor connections to earlier phases. Paul Fernandez (project construction manager) and others said underground plumbing work and conduit for MEP trades is being placed ahead of cell deliveries.

Paul Fernandez noted the project experienced one setback when lightning damaged electrical switches for camera systems. That damage has delayed final readiness because camera functionality is required for secure occupancy; parts and repairs are in progress and staff said insurance and vendor work are involved in expediting repairs. Commissioners asked about contingency staffing if cameras are temporarily unavailable; staff said the sheriff’s office would staff the facility at increased levels until camera systems are restored.

The construction team said the project remains on track for upcoming milestones and that the kitchen already has equipment and food staged for move‑in. Staff earlier reported the project is under budget by an amount discussed during the meeting (budget figures reviewed by the construction manager).
