Trenton council appoints new zoning board members, names alternates

Trenton City Council on Feb. 4 appointed members to the Zoning Board of Adjustment after interviewing applicants in a public session.
Vanita Capahi introduced herself to council, describing seven years as a Trenton resident and work in policy at the state Department of Human Services. “I live and work here, and very much wanna be able to contribute more,” Capahi told the council.
Michael F. Hurtado, who described himself as born and raised in Trenton and a graduate of Kean University in public administration, said he wanted to serve to help the city’s “upswing” and pledged to be independent on decisions that could intersect with council matters.
Councilwoman Williams nominated Capahi for the four-year regular member term (ending Dec. 31, 2028) and Hurtado as first alternate (two-year term ending Dec. 31, 2026). Enid Sanchez was appointed alternate 2 for a two-year term ending Dec. 31, 2026. The council approved the slate by roll call; Council President Gonzales was excused.
Why it matters: The Zoning Board hears applications that affect land use and neighborhood development; council deliberations focused on applicants’ planning knowledge, local ties and whether they would act independently in quasi-judicial decisions.
Outcome: Motion carried by roll call. The appointments were placed on the consent agenda and approved.
