Ponca City district meets with Ponca Tribe; district previews STEM summer programs and early-childhood outreach

District leaders reported a first meeting with the Ponca Tribe and described plans to strengthen outreach, increase pre-kindergarten access and preview summer STEM experiences funded in part through a private donation.

At the meeting, the district—s Title VI director presented to the Tribal Council. District staff said the Ponca Tribe—s council structure is similar to the school board and expressed a desire to build better lines of communication. The superintendent said the district serves families from roughly 40 tribes and five recognized tribal reservations and offered direct contact to tribal leaders to improve collaboration on early-childhood enrollment and services.

Why it matters: improved relations could increase pre-K enrollment, coordination of local services and culturally responsive programming.

District staff said Casey Wilson, the district—s pre-K principal, discussed strategies for promoting pre-K enrollment and asked for tribal input on outreach. The superintendent said the meeting yielded ideas on how the district and tribe could work together to identify and enroll eligible children earlier so students do not arrive in kindergarten behind peers.

The superintendent also announced an upcoming STEM Academy for the summer, tied to a donation from Phillips 66, and said a presentation on summer experiences will be provided to the board in March. District staff indicated driver—s education and other summer programs performed well last year and that they plan to publish summer-opportunity details by March 10 to give families time to plan.

Next steps: the district will maintain contact with Ponca Tribe representatives, present the summer STEM plan in March and continue outreach to increase pre-kindergarten participation.
