Board approves non-faculty coach list after public questions about paying volunteers

Before the vote several residents raised questions during public comment about whether volunteers would be paid for coaching duties, how much they would be paid and whether those payments were included in the proposed budget. James Stevenson and other residents urged transparency, asking for dollar amounts and clarity about whether volunteer coaches would remain unpaid or receive payment. Staff replied during the meeting that some third- and fourth-grade coaches referenced by commenters were not included in the budget because they are volunteers.
During the roll-call voting portion of the meeting, Miss Bridges said she would not vote on the item because her nephew was on the list. The board proceeded with a roll-call vote; the motion to approve the non-faculty coach approvals carried.
The action formalizes non-faculty coach appointments for the district. Public comment at the meeting highlighted community concerns about whether volunteers should be compensated and called for clearer budget disclosures for items discussed at workshop meetings.
