Council approves resolution to establish Summerville cultural arts district

Speakers at the meeting described a concentration of arts organizations and events within roughly one square mile of downtown. Jana Riley, executive director of Public Works Art Center, told the council: "Within 1 square mile of really right here, we have dozens of arts nonprofit organizations, dozens of exhibition openings a year," and she urged the council to "stake our claim" as the Lowcountry’s cultural arts district.
Council members praised the proposal and said designation could help economic development, cultural identity and tourism. A motion and second to approve the resolution carried without recorded opposition.
