Students perform and display art as district highlights referendum outreach

The Lawrence Township Board of Education opened part of its meeting to student performers and an art contest tied to the district’s March 11 referendum information campaign.
LES (Lawrence Elementary School) third graders presented two musical numbers from their upcoming production "Go Fish," and a portion of the Lawrence High School gospel choir performed during the same agenda segment. Board members publicly thanked teachers, students and parents for the performances.
District staff and the operations manager conducted an art contest connected to the referendum outreach. The district received 77 entries from kindergarten through 11th grade and judged them in age categories. The operations manager said judges — including art teachers, art supervisors and some board members — advanced about 25 finalists and selected multiple winners, with more than one winner named in the K–2 and 3–5 categories because of high submission volumes.
Winners were announced in a public certificate presentation; the meeting listed the full roster of winners and participants by name. The district also displayed the artwork near the meeting entrance and invited attendees to view the submissions and take refreshments at the conclusion of the event.
The program was presented during the public portion of the meeting and was described by board leaders as an element of community engagement for the referendum. No formal board action was required for the performances or the contest.
