Sunset Park maintenance, pool repairs and staffing shortfalls highlighted at Lago Vista parks meeting

Katie (last name not given), the city parks assistant director, reported that restrooms at Sunset Park "are not working because the solar panels were not working on the restrooms," and that she is arranging for a company to repair them. She said athletic fields had recently been aerified and were being prepared for local youth soccer, baseball and softball seasons, but that work had been delayed by weather.
Katie told the committee the parks crew is operating with a single maintenance employee and that hiring for a part-time ambassador position and a parks director has been paused; she called the current staffing level a constraint on maintenance and on faster project delivery. "Right now, I only have currently 1 employee," she said.
On the municipal pool, Katie said a leak or related issue has produced persistent water loss; the pool has been replastered and an autofill is being installed to keep water levels stable. She said replacing underwater lighting and other long-fuse repairs are expensive, and that council had directed that private pool parties be discontinued so the facility is open to the public when operating. Katie summarized the council direction: "That is correct. That is what city council did at all." She also said military patrons would be admitted free under council policy and that the pool’s regular opening is being targeted around Memorial Day.
Staff also reported on several funding and project items: a Charnback Conservancy grant for trails (staff said phase 1 must be completed by June to meet grant requirements), a TxDOT-led landscaping project on Highway 1431 that is delayed until TxDOT completes road work, and a splash pad at Sunset Park that "does work, but it is not in compliance" and would need additional council funding to bring into regulation. Katie said some equipment purchases — replacement trucks and trailers and planned new lawnmowers — were approved in the current budget, but that other needs remain unfunded.
Committee members pressed for clearer estimates, faster scheduling of repairs and better documentation of grants and deadlines. Paul Prince, the committee’s city liaison, confirmed that some grant deadlines and phase requirements remain active and that legal transfer of property for grant compliance is in process for trail work.
The committee asked staff to return with clearer timelines and cost estimates for the pool repairs, splash pad compliance work and the restroom solar repairs; staff said they would pursue contractors and report back.
