Sandoval County treasurer promotes staff, seeks school credit for junior county treasurer program

Treasurer Taylor announced the promotion of an internal candidate to the treasury and collections supervisor post and said the treasurer's office is pursuing ways to strengthen the Junior County Treasurer (JCT) civic-education program.
Taylor said Josephine Romero, previously an accounting specialist senior who handled monthly distributions, was promoted to treasury and collections supervisor and that the accounting-specialist-senior vacancy has been posted. Taylor also said that Debbie Turmarkey has been hired as a tax researcher and is scheduled to begin on Monday, Feb. 17.
The staffing changes follow the retirement of a long-term employee, Annette Chavez, who served almost 40 years as treasury collection supervisor. "Annette Chavez...had a huge amount of institutional knowledge," Taylor said, explaining the need for a replacement with supervisory experience and property-tax knowledge.
Taylor outlined recent and planned activities for the JCT program: the 2024 cohort completed a mock Board of Finance presentation on Feb. 10, one student attended the legislative opening session in January, and a public recognition is scheduled for Feb. 26 so families can attend. The program meets biweekly and Taylor said that, over approximately five months, the students met about 10 times with one-on-one sessions, quizzes and guided discussion.
Taylor said she wants to work with local high schools so students can earn credit for participation and to create more in-office shadowing opportunities. Commissioner Jones suggested seeking a brief slot at school assemblies to reach more students. Commissioner Brook and Commissioner Herr also asked about increasing hands-on opportunities and outreach to schools.
Taylor said last year and this year only two students submitted essays for the program and that she hopes stronger school engagement and credit options will increase participation. She added that the application requires an essay but said the transcript was uncertain whether the required length was "100 or 250 words."
