Supervisors approved funding to begin design work for a space-optimization program intended to consolidate county office space and avoid future capital costs, county officials said.
The Board of Supervisors approved a $2 million allocation to begin design work for a countywide space-optimization effort intended to condense unused office space and create shared workplace options, county staff told the board.
County facilities staff said a prior study of the county’s office portfolio — roughly 2,000,000 gross square feet — identified opportunities to consolidate and reconfigure spaces, produce hoteling or shared desks and reduce the need to lease or construct additional properties. CJ Jones, director of facilities management, said the $2 million will fund the design work required to execute the study’s recommendations across several buildings.
Assistant county manager Darcy Coburn and Jones told the board the consultant’s analysis estimated capital-avoidance savings in the range of $200 million to $300 million over the next 15 years if the recommendations are implemented. Members of the public asked for a breakdown of how the $2 million would be spent; county staff said the amount funds design and implementation planning and offered to provide the contract details and a timeline to requesters.
The item was moved, seconded and approved unanimously.
