Alpena County to pursue shared emergency manager with Montmorency County, aims for April 1 hire

Alpena County commissioners authorized staff to pursue a shared emergency management position with Montmorency County and to finalize a joint job posting and contract language, with the intent the appointment would be presented to the full board before signature.
County staff said the shared position would oversee emergency management for both counties and that current local emergency management staff have been involved in negotiations. Jesse, county staff, told the committee that the 9‑1‑1 fund — which is separate from the general fund — has sufficient monies to cover the county's share of the position.
According to staff, Montmorency County proposed that both county chairs and local emergency managers participate in interviews. "Our hope is to have this position filled by April 1," Jesse said. The county described the arrangement as expected to produce cost savings for Alpena County.
Commissioners asked for a motion to authorize the chair and county staff to finalize the posting and contractual language and to participate in a joint interview process with Montmorency County. The committee approved that motion.
Staff said the formal contractual agreement would be returned to the full board for any required approvals or signatures before the hire is finalized.
