Lincoln County Schools spotlights students: senior spotlight, spelling bee winner, leadership and Ignite awards

The board hosted a senior spotlight featuring a West Lincoln High School senior, Angel, who described coaching youth soccer, plans to pursue welding at Gaston College and automotive training afterward, and recalled a memorable senior night. The superintendent asked seniors to return in future years to share updates on their progress.
The district named Eva Hedrick as the spelling bee winner; she prevailed in 24 rounds and received a trophy, a certificate and a $100 check. Runner-up Evelyn Dragoon was not present.
Union Elementary’s student leadership team, sponsored by Miss Dellinger and Miss Thomas, received recognition for committees that support school beautification, community service, fundraising and spirit. West Lincoln Middle School students Taylor Garmin and Connor Haywood were recognized for flag-detail duties, and teacher Amanda Martin of West Lincoln Middle School was honored for organizing a Renaissance unit and in-school festival.
West Lincoln High School’s ESL student leadership group (including Angel and Jimena) was recognized for mentoring and tutoring Spanish-only students on Thursdays, pairing them with bilingual peers to check on grades, attendance and well-being and to share Hispanic cultural traditions.
Two essay contest winners were named: Caitlin Silski (East Lincoln Middle School, eighth grade) and Mallory Matheny (North Lincoln High School, tenth grade). Matheny’s essay won at the district level and is advancing to state-level judging.
The board presented Ignite Awards for scholastic achievement to several athletic and arts programs. North Lincoln High School’s women’s cross-country team was recognized for a team GPA of 3.89 and its state championship; West Lincoln High School’s marching band was recognized for a team GPA of 3.67 and repeated success in performing-arts awards.
Other community recognitions included certificates and monetary awards presented by the Coalition of Churches for a Martin Luther King Jr. essay contest; Reverend Steve Wingate and Dennis Poston represented the coalition.
Presenters asked students and sponsors to come forward for photographs and certificates during the meeting.
