Superintendent Dr. Allen told the Lincoln County Schools Board of Education that a Golden LEAF grant has awarded more than $1 million to Gaston College to upfit space and support a Lincoln County Schools Health Academy in partnership with Atrium Health.
Dr. Allen described the grant as an investment to expand health-care career pathway opportunities for Lincoln County students at Gaston College and in conjunction with the School of Technology. He said the district applied for the grant with Gaston College and Atrium Health and that the county commissioner supported the application.
Dr. Allen also updated the board on near-term athletics schedules, saying winter sports are wrapping up and high school spring competitions are roughly two weeks away while middle-school spring tryouts were pushed to next week because of rain. He highlighted professional development work in the district: 25 teachers attended a recent installment of a teacher leadership academy, and staff participated in an "Iron Sharpens Iron" event to observe, provide feedback and improve instruction.
At the close of his remarks, Dr. Allen asked the board and audience to observe a moment of silence for Beth Pinkney, a Lincoln County Schools employee assigned to North Lincoln High School who died; he asked the public to remember Pinkney's family.
Dr. Allen characterized community feedback as positive in response to recent "line change" discussions at community forums, saying that people impacted had expressed appreciation for the district's offerings. He did not provide further operational or budget details for the Golden LEAF grant beyond the amount and the named partners.
