Cannon County Schools says state granted one snow-day waiver; calendar changes possible if more storms occur

District staff told the Cannon County Board of Education that the Tennessee Commissioner of Education granted a waiver for one previously missed instruction day after the district submitted road photos as evidence.
The waiver means Cannon County does not currently need to add make-up days to the 2024-25 school calendar, but staff warned the board that additional winter weather could necessitate a March agenda item to alter the calendar. "They granted that appeal," a staff member said, noting the district requested one day and did not ask for additional days to avoid future difficulty with appeals.
The board discussed options should more days be missed: using a March professional development day, converting a scheduled work day on May 22 to a student day, holding report-card pickup on a Saturday, or extending the school year past Memorial Day as a last resort. The staff member said the district has been granted waivers in consecutive years when sufficient evidence was supplied.
Board members asked staff to monitor forecasts and return to the board in March if further calendar adjustments are needed.
The board also noted that other districts in the region are similarly short on instructional days and that the district will continue to submit appeals when warranted.
