Cannon County Board approves hire of Elrod and discusses restarting high school track program

The Cannon County Board of Education approved the appointment of Bridal Elrod as a track coach and heard from Elrod about plans to re-establish an on-campus track program that would pull athletes from cross country and other sports.
Board members moved the hire as part of the consent agenda and then invited Coach Elrod to describe program plans. Elrod said the program will take several months to prepare and that the school likely will not be sanctioned by the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) this school year because of coach and insurance requirements. "We're just kinda waiting to get the green light," Elrod said, describing outreach to area coaches and training arrangements at an offsite track.
Board members and Elrod discussed equipment, practice sites and a timeline. Elrod said cross-country athletes and other runners will transition into track in the spring and that area coaches have agreed to let Cannon County athletes train once a week on a regulation track. He said the program expects to rely on some existing gear and donated uniforms and will try to minimize new costs. "It's not gonna be any cost really on the actual uniform sports," Elrod said when asked about uniforms and gear.
The board did not set a separate public vote beyond the consent agenda approval. The discussion clarified that, absent TSSAA sanctioning this year, Cannon County athletes may focus on local meets and training as the program builds toward full competition.
Board members thanked Elrod for attending and asked staff to continue coordinating sanctioning, insurance and facility access.
Details noted at the meeting: the hire of Bridal Elrod was listed on the consent agenda as "approve Bridal Elrod as track coach at Cannon County High School." The board also discussed three overnight trips listed on the consent agenda (state DECA convention in Chattanooga; senior trip to Orlando and St. Augustine; junior beta trip to Orlando) though those trips were not the focus of Elrod's presentation.
