Council hears CRTPO funding win for Indian Trail intersection; reimbursement and shortfall requests outlined

Indian Trail — Council members told the meeting that the town’s intersection improvement application submitted to the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO) received a positive recommendation from the project oversight committee and is expected to advance to the MPO for approval.

Council member Tom Hunsinger (presenting the update) said the town submitted two discretionary projects in CRTPO’s fall call: an intersection improvement (Snitson/Hardis/Indian Trail Fairview and Yachts Road) and a shortfall request for the IT Complete Streets project tied to additional roundabout work and night work/asphalt needs. Hunsinger said roughly $30 million in discretionary funds were available across member jurisdictions and that most applicants received partial or full awards; the town’s intersection project was recommended for funding by the oversight committee and is expected to proceed to TCC and MPO consideration in March.

Hunsinger clarified earlier cost estimates and noted a small numerical adjustment to federal/local match figures rather than a substantial change to the project scope. He also said the shortfall request for the Complete Streets project was reduced in the application from $1.8 million to $1.65 million, and that the town’s share would be roughly $330,400 (an 80/20 split with federal funds covering the remainder) if approved.

Mayor and other council members thanked staff for pursuing the grant funding and cited the town’s ongoing presence at CRTPO meetings as helpful to securing discretionary resources. Council member Clarence (serving on CRTPO) was singled out for attendance and participation at meetings.

No formal council action was required at the meeting; staff indicated they will report back at the next meeting after the MPO and TCC votes.
