Faulkner County animal shelter near opening; asphalt and final turnover remain

Faulkner County officials said the county's new animal shelter is close to opening after completing concrete pads and fencing, but county crews are waiting for several warm, sunny days to finish paving before the contractor turns the facility over.
Administrator Higgins told the court the concrete work for the outdoor kennels and fence posts is finished and the road department has "dressed up" the parking lot. He said the county needs "two or three days of 45-degree sunshiny days" before crews can lay asphalt and complete the final site work.
Higgins said the county has not yet received official keys from the contractor, but the local animal coalition has been allowed into the building to set up equipment and supplies. "They're probably ready in two weeks," Higgins said, repeating the coalition board's estimate for when a ribbon cutting could be scheduled.
Higgins said the coalition was setting up surgical lights and other medical equipment and that staff had made programming changes to the shelter's fire-alarm system to prevent alarms from sounding in animal holding areas. He said the sheriff's office and other partners were prepared to participate in an opening; the county plans a brief ribbon-cutting and a separate weekend open house so working residents may tour the facility.
No vote or formal action was taken during the report. Higgins asked court members for questions and said the county will notify the public when the contractor completes turnover and paving is finished.
