Cooper City honors Capt. Christopher DeGiovanni as he accepts promotion to Broward County major

The Cooper City Commission honored Cooper City District Chief (captain) Christopher DeGiovanni with a proclamation recognizing his service to the community as he prepares to accept a promotion to major overseeing a broader Broward County law-enforcement responsibility.

The commission presented a proclamation that chronicled DeGiovanni—s career with the Broward Sheriff's Office, his military service, and the programs he led in Cooper City including a real-time crime center, license-plate readers and other technology deployments, expanded patrol staffing, and redesigned code-enforcement efforts. The proclamation described initiatives such as "Get the Scoop," "Operation Front Door," "Crafting with a Cop," and community-engagement events launched or expanded under his leadership.

Captain Christopher DeGiovanni told the commission, "It's been my absolute pleasure to serve you," and emphasized the city's crime reductions under his watch. He cited specific reductions: closing 2024 with 45 vehicle burglaries (down more than 70% from the year he inherited) and a drop from about 30 residential burglaries in 2020 to 10 for 2024. He also said January 2025 showed "another 48% reduction in crime" compared with January 2024. DeGiovanni credited investments in staffing and technology and urged the commission to "stay the course" on public-safety spending.

Commissioners and a former mayor offered public praise. Former Mayor Greg Ross said Cooper City "has been safer because of him," and several commissioners thanked DeGiovanni for rebuilding and strengthening the city's public-safety partnership with the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Ending The commission declared a day in DeGiovanni's honor and wished him and his family well as he moves to the county-level assignment; commissioners urged continued investment in public safety to sustain recent crime reductions.
