The Wylie City Council on Feb. 11 issued a proclamation declaring February 2025 as Black History Month and heard from Juneteenth of Wylie organizers about activities planned for the year.
Mayor Matthew Porter read a proclamation and said, "I am honored to hereby proclaim the month of February 2025 as Black History Month in Wiley, Texas," recognizing the contributions of African Americans to the city and encouraging residents to reflect on history and heritage.
Rodney, identified in the meeting as the acting president of Juneteenth of Wylie, described recent programs and plans for 2025. "The Juneteenth of Wiley has really been growing over the last year," he said, and listed recent community efforts including coat and food drives, senior teas, participation in downtown events and parades, and a high-school pageant. Rodney said the organization is planning a Juneteenth event on June 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., is seeking more vendors and sponsors, and is working to invite Opal Lee to receive an award.
Rodney also said the organization is working with the American Legion and Auxiliary to hold a gala and toy drive at the armory and continues to recruit volunteers; the group's event calendar is posted at wyliejuneteenth.org. Another organizer thanked the city and the police department for support.
Council took no formal action on the presentation; the proclamation and remarks were part of the meeting's presentations and recognitions.
The mayor encouraged residents to consult the library's curated Black History Month materials and the city's calendar for details on local events.
