TWC approves $970,169 to fund nine additional teacher externships

The Texas Workforce Commission on Wednesday approved an allocation of up to $970,169 in statewide WIOA funds to add to the Teacher Externships for Teachers program, allowing nine more applications to be fully funded and bringing the total awards to 19 for fiscal year 2025.
Staff told the commission that $1.4 million in WIOA statewide funds had already been made available and, based on scores, the commission could fully fund the 10 highest-scoring applications. Joel Mullins, workforce development, said staff found the additional nine applications to be of high quality and recommended adding $970,169 to allow funding of all 19 eligible applicants.
Commissioner Trevino moved to approve the allocation of up to $970,169 to the externship program, and the motion was seconded and approved unanimously, the chair said. The staff recommendation described in the discussion paper was adopted by the commission.
Joel Mullins and Leslie Crews of the Workforce Development Division answered commissioners' questions about timing and future federal allocations; staff said the next federal allocation would be available July 1 and that related budget items would return during the May budget build process. The approved funds come from federal WIOA statewide reserves allocated for fiscal year 2025.
The action does not specify individual award recipients in the public proceedings; staff said 19 applications will be fully funded after the allocation. The commission did not identify any dissenting votes on the motion.
