Byram Hills board approves before‑school “0‑period” band and orchestra pilot at Wampus Elementary

The Byram Hills Central School District Board of Education on Feb. 11 approved a pilot before‑school instrumental ensemble (a so‑called “0 period”) at Wampus Elementary School aimed at reducing scheduling conflicts that have led some fifth‑grade students to drop band or orchestra.

District staff said the pilot would run from 7:45 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., would target fifth graders (the grade with the most pull‑out services and ensemble scheduling conflicts), and would rely on shared staffing between the elementary and the secondary music program so existing teachers could cover the lessons without changing contractual hours. Security staff will be on site at 7:30 a.m. and students who qualify may use existing middle‑school bus runs, the district said.
