Council approves 7-month extension request for Port Town sector plan preparation

Prince George's County Council on Feb. 11 authorized a seven-month extension request from the Planning Department to prepare a draft Port Town sector plan and a sectional map amendment.

Planning Department staff, represented by Miss Hightower, told the council the department requested the extension to: coordinate with the future District 5 council member, evaluate recently passed state and local legislation for impacts on the plan, and allow additional time to align the draft with the county master plan of transportation. Staff said it expects the Planning Board to grant permission to print no later than Oct. 31, 2025.

Councilmember Fisher moved to authorize the chair's signature on the letter approving the extension; Councilmember Harrison seconded. The clerk called the roll for the authorization and the motion carried 9-0.

Councilmembers discussed that the Planning Department would like the county council, sitting as the district council, to approve the extension. No changes to the extension length were made on the floor; the council approved the department's requested timeframe and directed the chair to sign the transmittal letter.

The approval allows planning staff additional time to incorporate input from the incoming District 5 member and to account for new legislation and transportation plan alignment before the Planning Board's printing and public review schedule.
