Collierville ratifies emergency purchase to replace water-damaged gym floor at H.W. Cox Community Center

The Collierville Board of Mayor and Aldermen on Feb. 10 ratified an emergency purchase (EIN 0350) to replace Court No. 1 at the H.W. Cox Community Center after a December incident in which a sprinkler head was struck and water seeped beneath the floating gym floor.

Parks and Recreation manager Mark Ellis told the board the incident occurred Dec. 18 when "an adult member of our fitness center accidentally struck a sprinkler head which caused a significant amount of water that was released out onto the floor." After multiple assessments and moisture readings, staff determined the court was "beyond repair" and required replacement. The town received a quotation from Sports Floor Incorporated for $141,674.01 to demolish the existing floor, install a new wooden floor, sand and paint lines, and finish the surface. Ellis said the town has a projected insurance reimbursement of $157,637.23 for the replacement.

Alderman Roberts asked whether contractors would moisture-check the concrete sub-surface before work begins and whether the repaired court could be matched to Court No. 2. Ellis and other board members said staff would pursue samples and review quotes to address color matching and moisture concerns. Staff estimated completion in April; Ellis specified April 10 as an anticipated completion date.

A motion to ratify the emergency purchase passed on a roll-call vote, with affirmative votes by Aldermen Hall, Jordan, Stamps and Robbins and Mayor Frasier. The procurement was approved so the town can proceed with demolition and installation under the emergency purchase authority and coordinate insurance reimbursement.
