Akron City Council on Feb. 10 approved an ordinance authorizing a conditional use to construct a two‑family dwelling at 161 Hillbisch Avenue. The committee reported favorably and the council passed the ordinance by a 10‑0 vote.
Mr. Antonucci, speaking for city staff, said submitted plans show a two‑story, side‑by‑side duplex with each unit containing three bedrooms. The proposed building would sit 25 feet from the front property line to match neighboring homes, include a centered front porch extending about 8 feet from the façade, and provide a driveway north of the building to permit parking behind the building line. The petitioner noted the original home on the lot had burned down.
The lot, about 7,800 square feet, is larger than many in the neighborhood and—according to staff and the planning commission—affords adequate open space and parking for a duplex. The staff and the planning commission recommended approval subject to conditions.
Architect David Gross said he represents the Abdel Jawad brothers, who plan to live next door to their father, maintain a shared garden and keep a close‑knit family arrangement. David Gross said the design will match surrounding homes so the duplex “fit in nicely” with the street.
Several speakers expressed support and asked Ward Councilman Fusco to ensure the applicants have necessary resources. After the committee reported favorably, the council called the question. The chair announced the ordinance passed 10 to 0.
The ordinance authorizes construction under the city’s conditional‑use process; council noted approval is subject to conditions identified by staff and the planning commission.
