Colonial SD outlines Summer Academy and extended-school-year plans, staffing pending board approval

District staff presented planned dates, locations, target grades and staffing for Summer Academy and Extended School Year (ESY); Summer Academy staffing postings are open and ESY will serve students with IEP services.
District administrators reviewed Summer Academy and Extended School Year (ESY) plans with the curriculum committee and asked the board to approve operational details at a later meeting.
Mr. Perpus, the district presenter for the session, said Summer Academy 2025 is planned for July 8–31, operating Tuesday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and will serve Colonial students entering grades 1–8. Elementary grades (1–4) will be housed at Plymouth Elementary and grades 5–8 at Colonial Middle School. The program will focus on math and English language arts, and the district plans to provide daily activities, guest presenters, transportation and meals. Staffing postings for coordinators, instructors and support staff were opened about a week before the meeting; Perpus said two coordinator positions (elementary and middle) are listed and instructor/support positions are being recruited pending board approval.
A separate ESY program was described for students with individualized education program (IEP) services. A district presenter said ESY will run July 1–31 on Tuesday–Thursday full days (9 a.m.–3 p.m.) and will include related services (occupational and physical therapy as needed). The ESY staffing plan includes two lead teachers (elementary and secondary), special-education teachers, instructional assistants, behavioral aides and a school nurse. District staff said last year ttendance exceeded 100 students and that similar participation is expected this year.
Administrators asked the committee to note the staffing postings and to expect a formal board approval item; they did not record a committee vote on program authorization during the meeting. The session closed with a brief administrative item: a conference request for the director of technology to attend a school networking consortium in Seattle (March 31–April 2) with a program focus on artificial intelligence.
Ending: District staff will return to the board with formal approvals for Summer Academy and ESY staffing and budgets; details about student selection criteria and program assignments were described as continuing to be finalized.
