Pennridge SD’s human resources department on Feb. 10 outlined a series of hiring and recruitment initiatives meant to expand the local workforce pipeline, encourage district graduates to return as employees and address chronic bus‑driver shortages.
Tara Mossman, human resources presenter, told the personnel committee the district will begin guaranteeing a first‑round interview to applicants who identify themselves as Pennridge SD graduates on their applications beginning March 2025. The guarantee applies to qualified openings; Mossman clarified that applicants without required credentials for a professional position (for example, teacher certification) will not qualify for an interview for that specific role but may be offered other openings such as teaching assistant positions.
Summer and coop opportunities: Mossman said departments with summer openings include technology (about eight summer technology hires), custodial (around 10 summer custodians), maintenance (about three maintenance helpers) and nutritional services (a new opportunity estimated at five positions to support ESY food service). The district is also pursuing a potential co‑op partnership with Upper Bucks Technical School to enable Pennridge students enrolled in trades programs (HVAC, electrical, plumbing) to complete co‑op placements in district facilities; that effort was described as early stage and under discussion with the tech school.
Recruiting events and screening: Mossman announced a Pennridge job fair scheduled for May 20, 2025, to include open interviews and on‑site application support; college recruitment outreach is also planned to Moravian, Millersville, Penn State and Temple University in the spring. The HR department will operate monthly "late Mondays" on nights with board meetings to accept volunteer clearances for parents who cannot drop them off during regular business hours.
Transportation hiring: committee members discussed a targeted transportation job fair and paid CDL training to attract bus drivers. Mossman said the district will hire candidates initially as van drivers or bus aides so they can work while obtaining their CDL; the district will pay for CDL training. The committee confirmed van drivers must be 21 because of working with children.
Dashboard and staffing metrics: Mossman reviewed the HR dashboard covering mid‑December to late January. She said the district posted 66 positions fiscal‑year to date and filled 9 (fiscal year to date), reported about 820 employees on benefits coverage, 12 retirements in the December–January reporting period and 35 resignations year‑to‑date. She noted that retirement figures will rise in the next dashboard because retirements became effective Feb. 1 and will be reflected in the following report.
Who spoke: Tara Mossman (Human Resources), committee members including Mr. Barrios and Mr. Bramble (committee members who asked operational questions), and various administrators who provided hiring counts.
Ending: Many of the initiatives are operational and already scheduled (job fairs, summer hiring activities); the coop with Upper Bucks Technical School was described as exploratory with more details to follow as conversations continue.
