Easly City to consider two assistant-judge reappointments

Easly City Council heard readings of two resolutions — 2025-02 and 2025-03 — proposing two-year reappointments of Elena Calderon and Annette Ellen Mayes as assistant judges for the city’s court.

At the work session, a court representative (presenting on both items) introduced both judges and said the pair perform primarily weekend duty for the municipal court, which reduces the need for full-time weekend coverage by the presiding judge. The presenter said both women are “very diligent” and “work very hard.” The presenter explained the reappointments would align terms so that all assistant-judge appointments come up for review at the same time: “So, in order to do that, it was important that we go ahead and ask you to reappoint them beginning now in order so that everyone's term expires at the same time.”

Elena Calderon appeared and identified herself during the meeting. The presenter noted that the judges’ current terms have not yet expired and that the new two-year terms would begin immediately if the council approves them. When asked whether staggering terms might be preferable, the presenter said staggered terms were not recommended: “Not in my opinion. I think it's too easy to get lost in when someone's reappointment is to come up.”

There was no formal vote recorded at the work session; the resolutions were read and discussed. Staff said the reappointments would take effect if and when the council approves the resolutions in a future council action.
