Anderson City Council voted unanimously to approve a memorandum of understanding allowing an outside team to use the McCants Recreation Center field (off Vance Street) during the spring season.
City staff described the arrangement as similar to the existing partnership with Anderson University for Memorial Stadium: the city maintains the field and facilities while an outside organization uses the site during a defined season. Staff said the city holds a long-term 50-year lease on the stadium property used for other athletic events and that the Mechanicsville facility best fit the team’s needs for spring play.
City staff told the council the proposed spring schedule would include about five or six home games, some practices and possible postseason play through June or July if playoffs occur. Staff said the arrangement is expected to be no-cost to the city; the city will continue routine maintenance while allowing outside use during the spring when the city’s youth programs use the facility in the fall.
Councilmember Martinez moved to approve the MOU; Councilmember Steele seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
Staff said further public details and a marketing announcement are forthcoming from the interested organization.
