Collierville ratifies emergency replacement of H. W. Cox Community Center court after sprinkler damage

The Board of Mayor and Aldermen ratified an emergency purchase on Feb. 10 to replace Court 1 at the H. W. Cox Community Center after an accidental strike of a sprinkler head on Dec. 18 caused significant water infiltration under the floating wood floor.
Mark Ellis, parks and recreation manager, said town staff and insurers conducted multiple assessments and moisture readings and determined the existing court was beyond repair. An emergency identification number (EIN 0350) was issued Jan. 23 for the replacement project, initially estimated at about $142,000. The town received a vendor quotation from Sports Floor Incorporated for $141,674.01 to demolish the existing floor and install a new wooden sports floor, including sanding, line painting and finishing. Ellis said the town has received a projected insurance reimbursement of $157,637.23 for the replacement.
Board members questioned schedule and finish details. When asked about anticipated completion, Ellis said April 10. Alderman Nick Robbins asked whether the contractor would moisture-check the concrete sub-surface and whether the new finish could be matched to Court 2; staff said they would follow up on samples and quotations to try to achieve a uniform appearance. The board moved, seconded and approved the ratification on a roll call vote.
The motion ratifies the emergency purchase so the town may proceed with demolition and installation by Sports Floor Incorporated and accept the insurance reimbursement into town accounts.
