Governor Bill Lee told the joint convention Tennessee is positioning to lead in nuclear energy and proposed a $50 million state commitment to support development of the Clinch River site.
"We've now laid the groundwork. We have a willing partner in the White House. Now is the time to develop the Clinch River site and build the first small modular reactor in the nation on Tennessee soil," Lee said.
Lee noted the state-created nuclear energy fund and said the fund has attracted major companies to East Tennessee, naming Kairos, X-energy and Arano as industry participants. He said Arano "is seeking to make the single largest investment in Tennessee history," as cited in the speech.
The governor said the Tennessee budget will include $50,000,000 to demonstrate the state's commitment after the Tennessee Valley Authority applied for an $800,000,000 federal grant for the Clinch River site's development. The transcript does not include agreement language, timelines for the state's proposed funding, or details about the proposed reactor design; Lee framed the funding as a demonstration of state commitment to a federally partnered project.
