Kim Holland (BLW water staff) told the board that crews responded to a significant transmission main blowout on a 14-inch cast-iron water main on Lawrence Street near Covington Avenue in late January. Holland said the break was effectively a blowout and that the event met state criteria for issuing a boil-water advisory.
Crews worked through the evening and into the night; Holland said crews worked from about 5 p.m. until 3 a.m. to repair the main. Two other separate main breaks occurred on Lakewood Drive and Parkview Drive; Holland said those additional breaks did not require boil-water advisories.
After repairs and flushing the affected mains, the utility ran bacteriological tests early Saturday and received clear results early Sunday, she said. The board was told the boil-water advisory was lifted at approximately 8:10 a.m. Sunday.
A board member asked whether the affected pipe was old cast iron; Holland said the pipe in this location was about 71 years old and cast iron. Holland said the nearby breaks were installed at the same time and were close together, contributing to the cluster of work.
The board thanked operations staff for rapid response and multiple overnight repairs; no further action by the board was taken at the meeting.
