Jackson County DOT seeks multiple contract approvals including nearly $3 million paving package

Jackson County Department of Transportation (DOT) staff presented several procurement and project updates and the committee forwarded multiple contract recommendations to the full board.
Contracts and recommendations included: a one-year dust-control services contract (with one-year renewal option) to Corrigan Environmental (vendor name per staff), a street-sweeping contract (vacuum-style construction sweeping) with Sweeping Corporate of America for up to $150,000 for one year, an as-needed concrete work contract with the De Mata Brothers (not-to-exceed $150,000 for one year), and a highway mix asphalt (HMA) surfacing/paving contract with Michigan Paving for “just under $3 million” to cover township and county paving projects including work in Blackman Charter Township and Columbia Charter Township (approximately 14 miles of paving described by staff). All these items were moved, supported and approved by the committee to be forwarded to the full board.
DOT staff also presented a two-year biannual bridge-inspection services contract performed by the incumbent engineering firm (Great Lakes), noting the RFP included an “up to” amount of about $64,000 to cover inspections and any as-needed services; staff noted the immediate RFP-covered work may be less (staff cited a lower baseline figure in the RFP). The committee supported forwarding the inspection contract to the full board.
Traffic-control orders were presented to formalize school zones and stop signs that either were new or had not previously been brought forward: Western School District, Sharp Park Academy and Dibble Elementary requested school-zone designations; two stop-sign-controlled intersections (Deering & King; Mount Hope & Seymour) were also included. Staff said the changes are intended to ensure traffic-control orders are on file with the clerk so citations will be preserved if contested. The committee moved these items to the full board.
DOT staff presented the department’s monthly report, noting winter maintenance operations included 11 events year-to-date with just under 9,000 tons of salt used and about 23,000 gallons of chloride applied on county roads. The tree-removal safety program is ongoing; staff said stumps shown in a progress photograph would be ground flush when removal is complete. The committee received the monthly report by voice vote.
Ending: The committee advanced multiple DOT contracts and traffic-control orders to the full board and received the department’s monthly report; staff said they will return to the board as projects proceed and as additional traffic-control orders are identified.
