Carroll County approves rock and gravel contracts for secondary roads; department reports completed salt-shed repairs

Carroll County supervisors approved three secondary-roads material contracts and heard a department update Tuesday.

Roads staff reported they solicited quotes for 8,000 tons of limestone; the low bid was $21.50 per ton from Matt Meister. The board approved the limestone purchase to replenish stockpiles, a contract totaling roughly $172,000. "The low quote from Matt Meister of $21.50 a ton," Zach said when presenting the quotes. A motion to approve the purchase carried on a voice vote.

Supervisors also approved two gravel contracts with Stratford Gravel. The first will produce about 80,000 tons from the Sparks Pit at a price of $8.10 per ton; the board approved the purchase by voice vote. The second contract will supply about 60,000 tons from Kate's Pit at $8.56 per ton; that material will be mixed with roughly 10% limestone. Roads staff said the limestone component and additional crushing raise the cost but provide a stronger base in the northern part of the county. Staff noted the Sparks Pit gradations performed well last season and the Kate's Pit material would reduce hauling distances for northern routes.

In a department update, roads staff said the county replaced the salt-shed roof and repaired a failing back wall. Staff noted potentially active weather later in the week and said crews were monitoring forecasts.

All three procurements were approved by motion and voice vote; no individual roll-call tallies were recorded in the meeting minutes.
