The Tempe Elementary School District governing board on Feb. 5 approved two restructured Facilities Department positions that district staff said respond to an external audit and will reduce the department by two full‑time equivalents.
The board approved the Facilities Department Manager, Plumbing and Custodial position and the Facilities Department Manager, Systems Data and Customer Experience position, along with corresponding job descriptions. District administrators said the reorganization stems from findings in a December audit by EXMI and is intended to create operational efficiencies while preserving essential services.
"It is a reduction of 2 FTE in that process, which is a salary savings of around a hundred and $45,000," a district administrator said when introducing the item. The board voted to approve both job descriptions after brief discussion and questions about duties and placement.
Board members asked for details about the Systems Data and Customer Experience role. District staff said that person will administer the online ticketing system, manage data reporting for permits and act as a customer liaison to principals and department leaders, consolidating customer‑facing responsibilities and data tasks previously handled across multiple positions. Staff described the role as down‑scoped from a former supervisor position rather than a one‑for‑one replacement.
Board Member Lemmon asked whether the Systems Data manager would be out on site during projects; the district staff member replied that the person would be customer‑facing and would go to sites as needed.
Both motions passed with standard "Aye" votes. The item was presented as a response to the EXMI audit recommendations; staff said additional reorganizations and efficiency efforts are ongoing.
The board took no separate action on capital projects during this item; unrelated consent agenda items later approved included a bond‑funded boiler replacement noted by staff as part of the district’s capital planning.
