The Tiburon Town Council voted unanimously on Feb. 5 to approve an $8,000 expenditure from the 2024–25 operating budget to fund the 2025 Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Festival, which staff said is scheduled for May 17, 2025, at Zelensky Park behind Town Hall.
Town staff said the Diversity, Inclusion and Task Force (DITF) unanimously recommended the funding. The staff report included a multi-page exhibit describing performers and event logistics; staff clarified that the appropriation is a funding approval and does not involve any road closures.
During council discussion one member urged the DITF to ensure the festival includes programming on Japanese-American history and incarceration during World War II, saying education about that history is missing in schools and local conversation. “There is a wonderful culture to celebrate in the Japanese community, and I think that appreciation of our history and of their culture is very important,” the council member said.
The motion to approve the $8,000 expenditure passed on a roll-call vote with Council Member Fredericks, Council Member Ryan, Vice Mayor Wallner and Council Member Mary Thierault voting yes; Council Member Nick Farr was absent.
Staff noted the event will be organized by the DITF and will take place at Zelensky Park on May 17, 2025; the appropriation covers performer fees and other event costs as described in the staff report.
