Commissioners approve 2025 holiday selection; direct minor policy wording change

Kootenai County commissioners on Thursday approved the county’s 2025 holiday schedule after hearing a routine annual selection between Juneteenth and the day after Thanksgiving.
Leanna Kaiser presented the item and said the county has offered departments the choice between the two holidays for several years; for 2025 the list of departments changed slightly (specialty court was added; the public defender’s office was removed). Kaiser said once the board approves the schedule it will be forwarded to payroll.
Commissioners voted to approve the selection as presented. During discussion, staff proposed—and the board agreed to—language changes to county policy 3-12 so that the adopted schedule would stand for the year and any departmental requests to change their selection for the following year must be submitted to the BOCC office by Jan. 31. Sylvia (county staff) will forward the revised policy language to Darren for legal review before bringing the final policy language to a future business meeting.
A commissioner asked staff to consider fiscal representation for taxpayers when departments choose between holidays; departments typically cover related staffing costs from their budgets. No change to the payroll process was recorded beyond the usual forwarding of the approved schedule to payroll.
