Committee suspends administrator tuition-reimbursement policy until June after budget concerns and questions about prior approvals

Committee members described three interlocking issues: the existing board policy that authorizes the benefit; administrators' contracts that reference the benefit and include a clause allowing the board to modify or cancel the program; and the current budget, which has no line item allocated for the benefit. Board member Amy Levy said she was reluctant to support immediate suspension without legal review because administrators signed contracts that refer to the benefit and some employees may have planned based on prior forecasts.
Administration said the district had informed administrators during budget discussions that the benefit was effectively paused. Dr. Garrison said the district had not committed to further reimbursements given the current deficit. Committee members reported that in the January–February forecasting process for the prior year two administrators requested a total of 12 credits estimated at $9,620; those individuals had not yet received reimbursements after the board reduced the budget line.
Board members debated options including retaining the benefit but limiting reimbursements based on a February forecast of intended use, changing the policy timing for requests, or an outright suspension. Ultimately the committee approved a motion to suspend Policy 02/2001 and its associated rule until the policy committee’s June 4, 2025 meeting, and the motion was amended during debate to set that specific June date. The vote to suspend was 2–1.
The committee directed administration to bring any forecast or updated estimate of potential reimbursements to the June meeting so the committee can reconsider the policy with specific numbers. Several members also asked that the board follow up on whether previously authorized requests were honored and to communicate clearly to administrators about current eligibility.
