Senate Resolution No. 1, notifying the House of Representatives of the Senate’s convening, was received and adopted without objection. Senate Joint Resolution No. 2, appointing a committee to notify the governor that the legislature is in session, was adopted; Senator Livingston, Senator Singleton and Senator Barfoot were named as the three appointed senators to escort the governor.
Senate Joint Resolution No. 3 commended Abby Stockard for being crowned Miss America. The resolution, read at length on the floor, described Stockard as an Auburn University nursing student and dance-team member, noted she was crowned Miss America during the annual competition at the Walt Disney Theater in Orlando, Florida, and listed philanthropic activities cited by the resolution including fundraising for cystic fibrosis research and for the American Heart Association. The resolution said she has raised more than $200,000 for cystic fibrosis research and noted her past awards and community work as recited in the resolution text. The Senate adopted the resolution without objection.
Senate Joint Resolution No. 4 commended Greg Reed for distinguished service as he concluded his Senate career and accepted a position in state workforce development; the Senate adopted the resolution and then rose for an informal presentation and recognized Reed in the chamber. Senate Joint Resolution No. 5 appointed the three senators to escort the governor to a joint session. Senate Joint Resolution No. 6, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Volcker Incorporated, was received and referred to the committee on rules.
On legislative introductions, Senator Gavan introduced Senate Bill No. 1 relating to public education; the bill was referred to the committee on finance, taxation, education. Senator Gudger introduced Senate Bill No. 2 relating to the alcoholic beverage control board; the bill was referred to the committee on children and youth health.
