Wasco police report steady incident totals, unveil PAL program logo and name new coordinator

Wasco Police Chief provided the council with an update on public safety figures and new community policing work at the Feb. 4 meeting.
Chief reported the department logged 14,573 total incidents as of Feb. 1 and that January incidents ran about 1,675 for the month. The chief said the arrests made after several commercial burglaries reduced those specific crimes; “we haven't had any more commercial burglaries,” he said, and credited continued investigation by officers for recent apprehensions and property recovery.
The chief also presented a proposed logo for a Police Activities League (PAL) program and said staff had selected a design to use on shirts and a sign for the Powell building. He credited staff member Naomi for work on the design and told council that a PAL coordinator had started “yesterday” to handle administrative responsibilities; various officers will rotate participation in PAL activities so children meet multiple officers.
Council members praised the logo and the program. Mayor Pro Tem Saldania said simply, “I like it.” Council Member Martinez asked whether a permanent officer had been designated to run PAL; the chief replied the coordinator will carry administrative duties and officers will participate at different times.
Why it matters: the department says the combination of investigative follow-up and community engagement is reducing repeat commercial burglaries and the PAL program is intended to build ties between youth and officers.
