Superintendent highlights safety pilots, transportation audit and student awards

During her superintendent’s report, Dr. Berry framed updates around the district strategic plan and the board’s five priorities: safe and healthy environment, effective operations and fiscal responsibility, student success, exceptional personnel and effective partnerships.
Under safe and healthy environment, Dr. Berry said Queen Creek has implemented a vape-detector pilot at Queen Creek High School. "It's kind of like a pilot," she said, and staff will consider whether to propose the program for other schools if it demonstrates effectiveness. She also said the district is conducting a bus-route audit across the system to evaluate route safety, travel times and needed adjustments; transportation staff held a drivers’ safety meeting to review procedures for student management.
To improve facility safety and response, Dr. Berry said the district is investing Building Renewal Grant (BRG) funds to upgrade the fire-alarm system at Queen Creek High School, which the district characterized as a state-of-the-art improvement for faster detection and response.
On operations and fiscal matters, she reported the benefits committee is reviewing updates to IRS plans that affect district benefits and open enrollment. Staff noted planned site improvements at Eastmark including outdoor dining and bike racks.
Dr. Berry recognized student and staff achievements: Crisman (also spelled in the meeting as “Chrisman”) High School’s junior-varsity cheer team (state champions), Mario Aleman of Queen Creek High School receiving the Flynn Scholarship, Eastmark theatre troupe qualifying for the International Thespian Festival, and national-board certification awarded to teacher Megan Leiva at Faith Mather Sossaman Elementary. She also noted a successful Queen Creek job fair on Jan. 15 and partnerships with local police departments, Arizona State University and Chandler-Gilbert Community College around career panels and workforce-readiness efforts.
Dr. Berry’s report provided programmatic updates and recognitions; the board did not take immediate action on the items presented.
