Commission ratifies fairgrounds demolition plan; runway to be recycled for city projects

The San Benito City Commission on Feb. 4 ratified EDC plans to clear and demolish structures and remove debris at the city fairgrounds as a preliminary step for future development.
Staff described the action as a ratification of work approved by the EDC board. The project includes clearing brush, removing riprap and concrete, and scraping the site to prepare it for development that will be presented to the commission later.
Commissioners asked about funding and staff confirmed the work will come from EDC funds. Staff said the old runway will not be retained; instead, the asphalt millings and caliche will be stockpiled on site for reuse around the city.
A motion to approve ratification passed by voice vote with no roll-call names recorded.
Staff said the cleanup is intended to ready the site for a future development proposal to be returned to the commission for review and action.
