Barnes highlighted monthly family breakfasts (All Pro Dad and similar events) that aim to increase family engagement; a fourth–fifth grade choir that rehearses twice weekly; a Tuesday chess club serving 40–50 students; and a beta club that takes fifth graders to a yearly convention with state competition placements. Barnes said Blythe‑Bauer has reorganized early‑grade reading instruction into leveled, skills‑based groups for kindergarten through third grade during an 8:45–9:45 a.m. block; he reported enrollment of about 463 students receiving targeted instruction in that hour and said results have shown measurable improvement, noting the school moved from a D to a B overall on the state report card since the prior year.
The board also recognized the Cleveland High School bowling team as the first CHS team to qualify for the state tournament. Coach Seth Lamonya introduced team members and noted Carter Pierce qualified individually for state twice; Bridal Clark signed to bowl at Milligan and is the district’s first college‑bound bowler, Lamonya said. Jackson (student representative) and Dr. Elliott presented the team and the board took a photo with them.
Student representative Jackson provided a broader student update: Cleveland wrestling teams (boys and girls) returned from state with continued success (boys’ eighth consecutive state victory; girls’ third state title); the bowling team advanced to state; band and theater events, athletic signings and competitions were noted; and upcoming events include eighth grade night (Raiderpalooza), prom on April 5 and graduation later in the spring.
Why it matters: Board members emphasized community engagement and teaching innovations as drivers of the school’s improved state rating. The board acknowledged student successes in athletics and fine arts as markers of district activity and pride.
