Board members provided updates on multiple public-art projects during the Feb. 5 meeting, including a townwide sculpture program, the Little Free Art Library, public piano maintenance, and proposed murals.
Townwide sculptures: The board reported a project concept to place painted sculptures around Leesburg. Staff and a partner (identified as Kate from "88") have been meeting to identify potential public locations. The board discussed accessibility features, tactile elements for multi-sensory interaction, and possible sponsorships. Board members said work on a project presentation is underway and that the project would likely need review by the town's BAR (Board of Architectural Review) and potentially Parks & Rec depending on placement.
Little Free Art Library: A donated Little Free Art Library will be delivered to Parks & Rec for installation at Rockwell Park once weather permits concrete work. The donor and Girl Scouts will help supply starter pieces; the board discussed registering the unit with the national network and establishing a volunteer monitoring and refill plan.
Public piano: Members reported the outdoor public piano is being used frequently. The board approved a quarterly tuning schedule (within existing budget) and described minor structural repairs made to brackets and mounting to prevent sagging; a local technician will handle tune-ups.
Murals and Alley Projects: The Leesburg Movement has proposed small trompe l'oeil and mural installations in alleys (6 ft x 6 ft examples discussed). The board said it will assist with calls to artists and possible budget support while noting logistics such as parking and placement must be coordinated with property owners and town permitting.
Other notes: The board discussed banner replacement schedules, printing timelines that require coordination with council approval, and a potential exhibition/reception tied to banner rollouts and other public-art displays.
